Freedom & Obedience

(descriptive essay)

The city is sleeping… Except for one disturbed soul.

I’m standing on the balcony with a coffee mug and gazing at the black abyss below me. This seems so deep that the fall will stretch into unreal infinity. It fascinates… and attracts.

I take a sip of coffee and look up. Black houses are ahead. No light sparkles in windows, no disturbed souls on streets… Now everybody is seeing colorful dreams, when I’m seeing only black silhouettes.

I take a sip of coffee and look to the right. The branches of bare trees are swaying in blows of cold wind. The night’s breath never gives them peace…

I take a sip of coffee and look to the left. The road is lit by a single lantern. It works non-stop from dusk to dawn… Looks like a theater stage lit by a glimmer spotlight.

I take a sip of coffee and look up. Black sky with even blacker clouds. The stars have left our world long ago, and they are not going to return…

I take a deep breath and smell the night. The flavor of freshness, vivacity and inspiration. I close my eyes, and I’m enjoying every sip of the night…

Do morning, day or evening have a similar influence? With their hustle and bustle and endless meets? Nah, like a circus handler they are keeping souls on a leash and do not allow them to breathe freely. They require compliance with a schedule and every established rule. You have to obey, or you are going to have a bad time.

I open my eyes, and I’m seeing the sunrise. The first light sparkles in windows, the first disturbed souls on streets…

I take a sip… Well, there is no coffee left. So, is it my time? Time to obey again, I suppose…
