Georgy Bushchan – Armstrong Goalkeeper From Ukraine

“Just only fools don`t change their opinion!”
– Georgy Bushchan

Georgy Bushchan was born on May 31, 1994, in Odessa, where at the age of seven he began to take his first steps in football, although he had the opportunity to realize himself in swimming.

Like many children at an early age, the young footballer, watching the game of his idol Andriy Shevchenko, dreamed of becoming a forward striker. And the height of George, who at such an early age was a head taller than his peers, allowed him to count on success in this role. But fate, or rather the coach of the Odessa “CYSS-11” Gotsulyak Vitaly Nikolaevich, ordered otherwise. When the boy was nine years old, the coach saw in Bushchan the makings of a central defender and decided to transfer the player to this position. The young footballer was offended by this decision and said that he would be a goalkeeper.

The promising goalkeeper managed to declare himself five years after. It happened at the final tournament of the Children’s and Youth Football League of Ukraine among football players born in 1994. “CYSS-11.” Then finished in the fourth place out of eight possible (by the way, “Dynamo” then won gold medals), Bushchan became the best goalkeeper of the tournament and began to be called up to the national teams of Ukraine of different ages.

It was at that competition that Dynamo and Metalist drew attention to the young goalkeeper, who wanted to be invited to their teams.

In Kyiv, everything went well and having got to the Dynamo Academy at the age of 14, in a very short time, he started to be involved by the head coach in the matches of the first team.

Georgy first joined Dynamo’s bid in December 2011. Then Yuriy Semin included the young player in the reserve list for the match against Metalurh Donetsk. The main reason for this decision of the Russian specialist was the acute shortage of goalkeepers.

Bushchan’s debut for the main team of Dynamo took place on August 20, 2017 in the match of the Ukrainian championship against Stal. Kyiv then won 4: 1. Georgy made his debut in the European Cups on November 2, in the match of the 4th round of the group stage of the Europa League against Young Boys, in which the Ukrainian club beat the Swiss 0: 1 on their field.

In the 2019/2020 season, Bushchan defended his goal for the first time in his career in most of Dynamo’s main matches (20 games in the championship, 3 in the Cup, 5 in the Europa League).

On October 7, 2020, Georgy made his debut as a member of the national team of Ukraine in a friendly match with the current world champions, the national team of France (1: 7). Due to the fact that three goalkeepers called up to the national team fell ill with the coronavirus, the reserve goalkeeper in this match was 45-year-old Oleksandr Shovkovsky, who ended his career in 2016.

In seven days, Bushchan played two more matches for the national team of Ukraine in the UEFA League of Nations. In both games, Bushchan was recognized as the best player in the national team. Thus, Bushchan played three of his debut matches for the national team during the last three world champions. The match with the Spaniards was George’s first “dry” in the national team.

Since then, he has played in 11 matches for the Yellow and Blues, including being the main goalkeeper for Euro 2020 (5 matches), where our national team reached the quarterfinals.

Gradually, Georgy Bushchan turns into a new Ukrainian football legend and the number of his fans skyrockets not only in our University but also in the whole Ukraine!
