Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman

(Book review)

Evil in general does not sleep, and therefore doesn’t see why anyone else should.

The book tells the story of the birth of the son of Satan, the end of the world, and how the angel Azirafael, along with the demon Crowley, try to stop the Apocalypse.

The full title of the book sounds like ‘Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch.’ This is due to the fact that the book of prophecies of the same name plays a large role in the novel.

I would like to advise this book to everyone, because it mixed the features of two incredible authors, ice and fire, and this mixture came out absolutely explosive.

I was also pleased by the ending – in some sense there was a rethinking of the End of the World; something that I expected – Evil and Good remained in their places, and everyone has something to think about.

The most important thing in the book is the main characters. The advanced demon Crowley and the altruist and glutton angel Azirafael. I like everything in their duet: from the characters to the history of dating and current relationships. This idea of the friendship of an angel and a demon, essentially enemies, but who have to exist and work side by side constantly, rallying against a background of common interests, enemies and love for humanity – is simply brilliant! And I was very sorry when the book came to an end and their story ended.

I like it. If you are a fan of the books about a supernatural world, just bit terrible, and at the same time fascinating and funny, then the book is for you. My rating is 9/10.

P.S. Starting to read the book, I immediately wanted to parse it into quotes. So now I have a folder on the phone with quotes from the book J

“God does not play dice with the universe; He plays an ineffable game of His own devising, which might be compared, from the perspective of any of the other players [i.e. everybody], to being involved in an obscure and complex variant of poker in a pitch-dark room, with blank cards, for infinite stakes, with a Dealer who won’t tell you the rules, and who smiles all the time.”
