Many people around the world have to deal with procrastination daily. But what is procrastination? Procrastination is the action of unnecessarily and voluntarily delaying or postponing something despite knowing that there will be negative consequences for doing so. As they say it affects all ages. When you are a student, you can often delay your bedtime without a specific reason for it. As a result you feel tired next morning, moreover you can’t organize your life and plans, many will beat everything at the last moment. If we talk about adults, procrastination harms relationships with the family instead of, for example, spending time with the beloved husband, talking, cooking dinner together, cleaning up, the husband can play games and watch football. So this essay will discuss this topic in more detail and cover the reason for procrastination; it influences health and finally, the way how to solve this problem.

Unfortunately, procrastination frequently appears from a real or imagined fear or worry that is absorbed not on the thing that you avoid but its potential consequences. It’s true that sometimes people just create excuses in order not to do stuff they don’t like to do. For such procrastinators, they usually have good reasons for their procrastination (some would call them excuses): “didn’t have time‎”‎, “‎didn’t feel well”‎, “could not find what I needed‎”‎, “‎the weather was too bad” — the list is never ending. And even they know that their reasons to avoid doing things are not valid.

However, I would like to talk about another side of procrastination — fear not to be perfect. Often procrastination is due to an inability to concentrate or a feeling of being overwhelmed and indecisive. And I totally can understand it, people are afraid to do tasks poorly, especially when they face something for the first time, but often they are just too nervous, so that’s why they fail. Also, some of them worry about people’s opinion and can’t overcome the fear. To sum up, everyone sometimes procrastinates and it’s totally fine, however it shouldn’t become your habit. Never afraid to ask, never afraid to fail, never stop to practice!

Procrastination affects everyone and many areas in people’s lives. Most people think that only mental health suffers, but this is wrong. It also affects physical health. A great example of such procrastination influence will be bedtime procrastination. It is delaying going to bed. Which causes lack of sleep, tiredness, lack of concentration etc. Recent surveys show us that 74% of people say that they go to sleep later than they planned, it may happen not every day, but at least once a week. Moreover, they don’t have a strong reason to delay their sleep, especially, it happens with students. And speaking of which — students’ procrastination harms their grades and mental health. The prevalence of this phenomenon is so high that one-fifth of the adult population is unable to keep up their daily homework assignments.

One of the first step that you should take on your way to get rid of procrastination is to read about appropriate techniques. One technique is breaking large tasks into small steps. It will make you look at the task not as something overwhelming and impossible and definitely reduce your procrastination. There will be no more negative effects that you experience dealing with procrastination. Also in order to reduce procrastination, some interventions can be delivered by handling fear of failure and self-regulation.

To conclude, I would like to say that we discussed different aspects of procrastination. Why people face it in their lives, the reason for existing this problem and the most important — how people can deal with it. I mentioned some techniques that you can use and find the most comfortable one. If you recognize yourself in this essay, I really recommend that you should follow some technique from this text because inaction can lead to total chaos in your life and serious consequences that can affect not only your life but other people’s lives.
