‘The Catcher in the Rye’ by Jerome David Salinger

(Book review)

Probably, this is the most famous book of the last century, which everyone knows about. But maybe not everyone read. ‘The Catcher in Rye’ is an undeniably controversial book. Reading it, you will analyze the moral world of society many times. The main character is a teenager, Holden Caulfield, who suffers from fear; he is constantly looking for what is right in the world and what is not. He is the personification of every reader, because we all strive to find the “correct” path for us.

The novel is based on a boy’s story about the time when he left the boarding school and went to his own city. But none of the relatives knew about it. Throughout the story, we live the life of Holden, who sometimes fights with his friends, sometimes experiences unsuccessful dates with girls, and sometimes suffers from pretending to be an adult. All the time, the guy seems to be trying on different roles to find what he really likes. The main character’s condition is perfectly described by the quote: “I always say ‘nice to meet you,’ although I don’t like it at all. But if you want to live with people, you have to say different things.”

Also, this book is full of satire and sarcasm about the American twentieth century. The author created the atmosphere of that time and described the situation through the eyes and words of a teenager of that time. The conversational style of a rebellious boy is immediately noticeable in the text.

The most heartfelt moment I enjoyed was when Holden Caulfield sneaked into his little sister’s room and said that he wished to be the “catcher in the rye,” to save small children when they are about to jump off a cliff into a wheat field.

But I was not always fascinated by the main character of the book. Sometimes, Holden seemed to me completely reckless and irresponsible. Sometimes, I wanted to talk to him and say, “Calm down, boy.” But after reading the book, I also watched the modern film ‘Rebel in the Rye.’ It is about Salinger, his life and the history of writing the most famous bestseller. I delved deeper into the essence and realized that this is really a masterpiece.

I believe that everyone should get to know this story, live it and draw conclusions. My rating is 9/10.
