When I say I’m studying to be an editor, people say, “Wow, that’s great, but what is it?” A really cool question: what does it mean to be an editor?

Being an editor means reading texts and looking for mistakes. Look for spelling mistakes in the news, stylistic inaccuracies in fiction novels and blame the author for non-fiction for poor vocabulary…This means that you can’t read a book just because there are a lot of mistakes…Being an editor means that you read all the ads and advertisements on the streets and… look for mistakes there too…

Being an editor means that you dream of angry authors who do not understand why you threw their manuscript in the trash bin. Being an editor means that you read the dictionary over morning coffee and argue about whether you can put a hyphen or a better dash there…

Being an editor means gray hair because you can’t come up with a title for the text. And you drink soothingly, because you do not know how to tell the author that it is better for him to build a house than to write articles (You are even ready to arrange the author for construction work, if only not to read his writings.)…

Being an editor is constantly thinking that you can write better there. This means looking for the hour needed photo for the essay and thinking about what the best synonym can be found… Being an editor means putting deadlines and being afraid of them…

Being an editor means correcting your interlocutors and asking them to speak correctly. This means thinking about how the reader feels when reading this text. That means red eyes from the laptop and sleepless nights…
