‘Delicious in Dungeon’ by Ruoko Kui

(BOOK REVIEW)

Are you hungry? I got some of that scorpion broth from lunch if you want.”

–Senshi, Delicious in Dungeon

‘Delicious in Dungeon’ is what happens when your Dungeons & Dragons group gets really hungry and decides to eat the monsters instead of slaying them for loot. And weirdly? It works.

The story follows Laios and his adventuring party as they descend into a dungeon to rescue a teammate who got swallowed whole by a dragon.

But here’s the twist: they’re so broke that they can’t even afford food. So, instead of buying and packing food, they cook whatever beasties they manage to beat in the dungeon. Ever wondered what roast basilisk or slime jelly tastes like? This manga will not only tell you – it’ll give you the recipe.

What makes ‘Delicious in Dungeon’ special is how it blends classic fantasy tropes with cooking show vibes. It’s like The Witcher meets Master Chef. The characters are quirky and lovable, with just enough backstory and party banter to make you care when things get serious, and they do, surprisingly often. Don’t let the food gimmick fool you: there’s real emotional depth hiding between the mushroom risottos and roasted mandrakes.

In short, it’s funny, clever, and unexpectedly touching. Come for the fantasy, stay for the culinary chaos.

My rating is 9/10. I do recommend reading it, surely, if you are an aficionado of Japanese manga series.
