‘Duma Key’ by Steven King

(book review)

Life is like Friday on a soap opera. It gives you the illusion that everything is going to wrap up, and then the same old shit starts up on Monday.”
―
Stephen King, Duma Key

I have already read many of King’s works, but this book was really creepy for me! Edgar, the owner of a large construction company, gets into a serious accident. He injures his leg, his arm is amputated. A difficult period of rehabilitation begins, work with a psychotherapist. The wife cannot stand constant disruptions and files for divorce. Eddie almost learns to live again. The doctor advises him to change the environment for a certain period and move somewhere. And also – to get creative. For example, start drawing.

The hero, as a polite boy, listens to the advice of a specialist. So he buys all the necessary supplies for painting and rents a house on a kind of Doom Island. Things are starting to improve. He draws, rests, makes new acquaintances. Only, it seems, there is someone else here. Spirit of the island? Haunted house? Or maybe it’s a matter of painted pictures? Is Eddie drawing them on purpose? After all, it is not for nothing that during the “drawing sessions” he really feels his amputated hand…

The pictures really turn out beautiful, everyone admires them. They only have one feature. Does what Eddie draws come true? Step by step, our hero, together with his friends, discovers the secret of this island. It turns out that he was not the only one with such abilities. Ouch, it will be catching later! Believe in it! We all know that King is a true master of long, verbose descriptions and details.

There were no extra or too long episodes for me in this book. Everything is clear and in moderation. If something is thrown away, the essence will be lost. And the only thing I can’t get used to in his books is the author’s spoilers!!! Well, it would seem that the tense moment has passed, everything is fine with the heroes. You can exhale! Yes No! I turn the page, and here “this was my last conversation with her”! Well, how can we continue to live here? With this book, King was able to get into my brain and conquer my heart with this masterpiece.

I`d like to finish my book review with the words of the author, “Do the day and let the day do you.” My rating is 9.5/10.
