The view that having the ability to have easy conversations, express one’s own opinion, and talk to others without the misunderstandings is a gift is often heard. But even if you are gifted for it, doesn’t it mean you can? Prevent the misunderstandings? Can. Many factors play an essential role in communication that can lead to understanding or argument. The first factor is the language in general. Some point out that a common language enables people to communicate clearly with one another. Giving to the others, even if you spoke the same language, you would sometimes misunderstand each other. The most important arguments for the first statement are a clear knowledge of the meaning of the vocabulary, correct sentence structure and stress. According to this claim, nothing can ever be disregarded by the participants in a conversation. But, despite the arguments mentioned, this view hardly corresponds to reality.
The reason why the second opinion sounds more realistic is because of ourselves. Even when the other person is speaking clearly, we can lose ourselves in our own thoughts, not asking so as not to be rude, and then come to the wrong conclusion. We also frequently interpret what is said as we would like to hear it. We repeat a sentence several times with different tones, look for the hidden clues and as a result get absolutely other meanings of what was said.
In addition, we communicate with one another not only through languages, but also through gestures, facial expressions, our relationship. Many studies have been carried out and show that our gaze or hand movement, in addition, contains information. Therefore learn e.g. Teachers or psychologists at universities how to properly use their body language and read it by their students or patients. If you neglect such little things, it can gradually lead to misunderstandings and problems.
Besides, non-verbal communication differs depending on the culture, which also causes the misunderstandings. The usual shaking of the head for “no” and nodding for “yes” for Europeans will confuse Indians while talking to Europeans. They use the same head movements to pass on the same information only in reverse: shaking “yes”, nodding “no.” The example we considered is one of the best known, there are many more and we should read up on this if we want to avoid misunderstandings.
From my own experience I can add that if you have not yet acquired a new language, the small ambiguities often take place. But they are part of learning, you shouldn’t be afraid of them and the native speakers are always ready to explain the small differences and give you the right tips.
In summary, there is no doubt that communication without misunderstandings is impossible. They speak the same language, but that’s where human factors come into play. The wrong interpretation of body language and the mistakes in language learning also contribute to this. But you shouldn’t be afraid to discuss everything again afterwards so as not to give the misunderstandings a chance to develop into an argument.
