‘Shutter Island’ by American writer Dennis Lehane

(book review)

Reading Shutter Island by Dennis Lehane felt like stepping into a labyrinth where every turn holds a new mystery, and the exit keeps shifting. This psychological thriller pulls you in with its dark atmosphere, layered characters, and a plot twist so shocking it leaves you questioning everything you thought you knew.

The story takes place in 1954 on Shutter Island, home to Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane. U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels and his partner Chuck Aule arrive to investigate the disappearance of a patient, Rachel Solando. From the moment they set foot on the island, something feels off. The staff is secretive, the patients are eerie, and the island itself seems like it’s hiding more than just one mystery. Lehane masterfully blends elements of mystery, suspense, and psychological horror. What I loved most was how the story keeps shifting your perspective. At first, you think it’s just a detective story, but then layers of Teddy’s personal history start to unravel, and you’re drawn into his troubled mind. The pacing is perfect, with every chapter ending on a note that makes it impossible to put the book down.

The characters are another highlight. Teddy Daniels is deeply flawed but relatable, and you can’t help but root for him even as his reliability as a narrator starts to crumble. Chuck provides a great balance to Teddy’s intensity, adding a touch of humor and warmth to an otherwise chilling narrative. The real genius of the book lies in its ending. I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say it’s one of those twists that makes you want to reread the whole book to catch the clues you missed. It’s haunting, heartbreaking, and utterly unforgettable.

If I had to nitpick, some parts of the book felt a bit too detailed, especially the medical jargon and descriptions of the hospital. But honestly, those details also add to the realism and immersion, so it’s a minor complaint.

In short, Shutter Island is a must-read for anyone who loves psychological thrillers. It’s not just a story; it’s an experience that stays with you long after you’ve finished the last page. My rating is 9.5/10.
