The Calm Before the Storm: The Moment Before the Shelling

(short story)

Bogdan sat in the dugout, listening to the silence that reigned around him. The sky was overcast with heavy clouds, and although it seemed calm around him, a striking storm was raging inside him. A hunter by nature, he knew that this silence was only the calm before the storm.

He carefully watched his comrades, each of whom tried not to show his excitement. Only faces reflecting sweat and shadows from tired eyes gave out that the war did not let them go even there, in this shelter on the front line.

Every sound was alarming. A loud whistle broke the silence after a few seconds. Bogdan only managed to shout to his men: “Shelter!” But a moment later the first explosions were heard.

He felt the ground tremble under his feet. The explosions became louder and louder. But here, amidst all this chaos, his mind remained cold. Bogdan could only pray for a quick victory and for his boys to return home alive.
