The Case of the Lavender Glove

(story)

Lana Mirova worked at a flower shop. She was not a detective. But when rich Mr. Keene was found dead in his greenhouse, Lana felt something was wrong.

The police arrested his assistant, Joel. He said he did it. But Lana knew Joel. He was a kind man who would not hurt anyone — even bugs.

Lana went to the greenhouse. Flowers were on the ground, crumpled and broken. Mr. Keene’s favorite orchid was crushed. Next to it was one lavender glove. Only one. Where was the other?

Lana remembered something. Mr. Keene had a special orchid. He said he created it. But a few weeks ago, Lana saw a science article. A woman named Dr. Vickers wrote about the same orchid.

Lana went to visit Dr. Vickers. She said she needed flowers for a funeral. That was not a lie.

“I’m sorry about Mr. Keene,” Lana said.

Dr. Vickers looked nervous.

“Yes. Very sad.”

“I read your paper. A beautiful flower. Mr. Keene was angry about it, wasn’t he?”

Dr. Vickers did not answer.

Later, Lana told the police. They checked the glove. It had Dr. Vickers’ DNA inside — not Joel’s.

When the police asked her, Dr. Vickers told the truth. She went to talk to Mr. Keene. He laughed at her. She got angry and used the glove to kill him.

Joel had seen her leave. He thought it was an accident. He said he did it to protect her. But she did it on purpose.

Joel was set free. Dr. Vickers was taken to jail.

Back at her flower shop, someone asked Lana, “Are you a detective?”

Lana smiled. “No. Just someone who pays attention to details.”
