The Filter

(flash story)

My sister always said I was invisible at school. Like, literally invisible. I thought she was just being dramatic until last Tuesday when our yearbook photos came out.

There I was, sitting in the front row of Ms. Polishchuk’s class photo, but something was weird. Where my face should’ve been, there was just a blurry space, like someone had used one of those Instagram filters gone wrong.

I showed my best friend Katerina at lunch. She squinted at the photo and said, “That’s so strange… I can see you just fine in real life.”

Then Grisha from the AV club looked over and was like, “Oh yeah, that happens sometimes. The camera picks up your aura instead of your face. You’re probably a ghost.”

“I’m not a ghost!” I said. “I ate three slices of pizza just now!”

But then other weird things started happening. The cafeteria lady stopped charging me for extra fries. My crush walked straight through me in the hallway. And yesterday, during the math test I forgot to study for, my answers started appearing on the paper by themselves.

Maybe being invisible isn’t so bad after all.
