(Book review)
“When someone doesn’t like us, it’s natural to not like them in return, right?”
‘The Unhoneymooners’ is a bestselling modern romance book written by Christina Lauren in 2019. It became popular right away and still remains high in the bestsellers list.
It tells us a story of twins – Olive and Ami – yet the only thing that they have in common is their appearance. Ami has always been the best twin. She is more confident, determined, and lucky and everything just goes well for her. Olive, on the other hand, is a total disaster. However, when everybody gets sick on Ami`s wedding day, Olive decides to go on a honeymoon instead of her sister. And everything would be fine if not for one little inconvenience – Olive has to go on a honeymoon with Ethan, the brother of a groom, obviously to act like a married couple – yet everybody knows that Olive and Ethan truly, deeply, madly hate each other. So how will they manage to pretend to be in love for 10 days of their vacation? And maybe their feelings are not quite the hate?
I can state that ‘The Unhoneymooners’ is the best book read by me in 2021. In half a year I read it twice, and I never read a book twice in such a short period of time.
It is hilarious, entertaining and romantic. While reading, the only thing you can think of is lying on the beach on Hawaii drinking pina colada and worrying about nothing.
“I can appreciate my body in a bikini and still want to set fire to the patriarchy.”
The finest thing about this book is its characters. Olive and Ethan are so well-written that I had a feeling I really met them. Olive is so self-conscious, awkward and loser-ish, and Ethan is so successful, handsome and badboy-ish. However, we can trace their transformation throughout the book, and it is awesome. I loved their word fights and pranks.
“An eight-hour flight, and there’s no movie,” I say to myself, glaring at the screenless seat back in front of me. “Maybe they’re hoping your life flashing in front of your eyes will be distraction enough.”
The plot is excellent but predictable. Yet it doesn’t make you bored, just the opposite. When you know that everything will be okay, it makes you follow the story to discover what obstacles there will appear for the main characters to fight.
Although I am absolutely in love with this book, there is one thing about the finale I didn’t enjoy and overall I pictured it differently. I`m not going to tell you, though, because it would be a spoiler.
So, ‘The Unhoneymooners’ is a splendid summer rom-com that will give you only positive vibes. Really recommend you to read it if you like light-sensed books with no violence and blood.
I rate it 9/10
