Volodymyr Ivasiuk, Ukrainian Falcon. Shot in Flight

(article)

Volodymyr Ivasiuk is one of the creators of Ukrainian pop music. An outstanding Ukrainian who lived only 30 years.

Imagine, during his short life he wrote 107 songs, 53 instrumental works, created music for several performances. In addition, he was a professional doctor, a violinist, played the piano, cello, and guitar perfectly, and performed his songs skillfully.

Volodymyr Ivasiuk, in addition to music and poetry, also had a knack for drawing. The composer’s paintings are still lifes, landscapes, portraits of prominent people, self-portraits, cartoons and caricatures made with pencils or watercolors.

Having become popular throughout the Soviet Union, he stubbornly refused to write music for Russian texts, saying that he was a Ukrainian composer.

Ivasiuk was not just a musician, he was a patriot of Ukraine. With his songs, he revived the love of Ukrainians for Ukrainian culture and tried to oppose the propagandistic idea of one great “Soviet nation.”

Two months before his death, Volodymyr was summoned to the KGB for a discussion regarding the royalties he was supposed to receive for the release of his records in Canada. But the prominent Ukrainian was not interested in going abroad, and refused this offer.

On May 18, 1979, his body was found hanged in the Bryukhovytsia forest near Lviv. The official version, which no one believes and which gives many reasons for doubt, was suicide. However, it is likely that Ivasyuk’s death was a murder committed by the KGB.

In 2009, when the outstanding Ukrainian would have turned 60, he was awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.

For millions of Ukrainians, Volodymyr Ivasiuk is the brave falcon of the Ukrainian music, shot in his full flight, but stayed alive in their hearts.
