What is a Press Release and Why It Matters

(article)

You work for a company, an organization, or you’re planning an event. Something important is happening and you want the media to know. But how do you make sure journalists notice it and tell the story correctly? This is where the press release comes in.

A press release is a short and clear text. It shares news about an event, a launch, a change, or an announcement. It is written in a way that helps a journalist quickly understand the point and decide if it’s worth covering.

This is not an ad and not an emotional letter. It is a base for a news story. A press release doesn’t try to sell. It simply informs. It includes facts, dates, names, quotes, and links. The style is close to journalistic writing. In the best case, a journalist can copy and paste parts of it without changing a word.

A press release can also be an invitation. If you’re holding a press conference, an opening, or any kind of media event, the release is a way to say, “You are welcome to join us.” In this case, it must include details like when, where, who to contact, and how to get accredited.

Even a small story can feel important when written clearly. News isn’t always about breaking headlines. Sometimes it’s just the right fact, sent at the right moment.
