Review of the book Buy Yourself the F*cking Lilies: And Other Rituals to Fix Your Life, from Someone Who's Been There
by Tara Schuster
I ordered the book without much enthusiasm because usually, it’s not my type of book – everything that is motivational, about self-development and contains specific recommendations are perceived as “blah-blah-blah” and is forgotten after the last page. Not this time. Because everything in this book is beautiful – the meaning, the content, the language, and the emotions that it gives. This book is about love. Life-affirming, bold and daring, a little sad, but very kind, and most importantly – sincere and from the heart. This is not some deep psychological book – it seems like you talk with your best friend, who understands you and is open to deep conversation. “Buy yourself…” is one of the few books on self-help and self-development that you want to reread. It is kind, sincere, open-hearted (sometimes too much), and gives good advice on how to learn to take care of yourself and love yourself.
The book contains three chapters that describe very simple but effective rituals that allowed the author to organize his life, to get rid of bad habits and instead of it to acquire good ones, to understand your inner world and improve your emotional state, and more. If you apply, at least some of Tara’s advice in life, it will be quite a big step on the difficult path of creating the best version of yourself and your life. First, I decided to read the book from beginning to end to have a general impression of it, and only then would turn to those sections that I liked the most. The book is incredibly motivating. And even if you do not like any of the author’s recommendations, you still involuntarily start thinking about your life and try to do something to change it for the better.
If you are looking for some unique tips – just go further, they are not here. If you are looking for a real story, experience, a reminder of what things, actions, or habits that can save you from depression or decline, I think you have come to the right author. Tara Schuster’s advice is useful, although it’s not unique, I think I knew all these things, but I didn’t pay much attention to them. And yet it is so elementary. Our mentality or our culture did not pay too much attention to such things as love for ourselves and allowing ourselves to enjoy life more. After all, this has a thin line with selfishness (and I was just taught not to be like that))).
My favorite quotes:
“Listen here, b8tch, I worked hard, I deserved it, and you weren’t invited to this celebration of life at all.”
“You deserve three-ply toilet paper.”
My conclusion: Don’t expect this book to be a magic pill. You are that magic pill for yourself. This book will just help you realize that. And also the fact that you definitely need to have this book on your shelf is that there are times when there is a need to reassure yourself that you are truly worthy, and you should allow yourself to buy “those lilies” (or other interpretations of your needs).
10/10
