A CHANCE ENCOUNTER WITH STEVE JOBS

(magic realism short story)

One night, when my soul made a brief layover at San Francisco International Airport, I found myself seated next to none other than Steve Jobs. He was engrossed in his iPad but looked up as I nervously adjusted my jacket. Seizing the opportunity, I introduced myself.

Me: Mr. Jobs, it’s an honor to meet you. Can I ask—what drives your passion for innovation?
Steve: [Smiling] The idea that we can change the world, even in small ways. Technology isn’t just about tools; it’s about amplifying human potential.

Me: That’s inspiring. But with so many ideas out there, how do you decide what to pursue?
Steve: It’s about focus. We say no to a hundred good ideas to ensure we invest in the best ones. Simplicity and clarity are always our guiding stars.

Me: Speaking of simplicity, your designs are iconic. Where does that minimalist philosophy come from?
Steve: From understanding that less is more. I’ve always been drawn to Zen, and it taught me the beauty of removing the unnecessary.

Me: Zen and tech seem worlds apart. How do you bridge that gap?
Steve: [Chuckling] By realizing they’re not so different. Both require precision, balance, and attention to detail.

Me: One last question, Mr. Jobs. What advice would you give to someone trying to leave their mark in the world?
Steve: Don’t try to be someone else. Be authentic, stay curious, and never settle for less than extraordinary.

As his boarding call was announced, he stood, gave a polite nod, and walked away. Though brief, the conversation left me with a new perspective on not just technology but life itself.
