Back to the Middle Ages!

(traveling blog)

If you want to feel like a hero of a historical novel, you’re lucky, I have a surprise for you! Akkerman fortress is a historical and architectural monument of the 13th-14th centuries. It is located in Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi, Odessa region.

The fortress was built on the remains of Tyras, an ancient Greek polis on the northern coast of the Black Sea, but then the Huns destroyed the city. It is not known for sure when Bilhorod-Dnistrovskyi fortress was rebuilt. Most of the historians suggest that it was an enclave of Republic of Genoa.

If you do not want to imagine yourself a knight or princess, but a magician, I recommend that you should explore the northern part. There you will see hemispheres on the wall. They’re called tetractys — a figure of 10 points that form 9 right equal triangles. Someone consider it’s Druids magical symbols. However, in the reality everything is very simple — it’s a sundial.

Locals call it ‘a pearl of Budjak’. The fortress is located on the left bank of Liman and really looks like a pearl that was thrown away by the waves. All year round you can do a themed photo shooting here. I assure you, all photos will be stunning!
