Many brands test their cosmetics on animals. Almost 100 million animals die every year from this and testing of medicines, food, and other biomedical research, and this is only in the US!

We will focus on the latest testing methods and the brands that follow them. It is these beauty brands that do not test products on animals that are called cruelty-free.

It should also be understood that cruelty-free labeling does not mean that the cosmetics are organic, free of synthetic substances, or vegan. This inscription only confirms that the company does not test its products on animals!

A brand receives this status only under four conditions:

– the manufacturer itself does not test products on animals at any stage of production;

– its suppliers do not test on animals the raw materials from which the cosmetics are made;

– the brand does not test products on animals on behalf of third parties;

– the brand does not test products in countries where it is required by law.

There are several types of certificates (marks on products) to certify cruelty-free status: Leaping Bunny, PETA (Beauty Without Bunnies), and Choose Cruelty-Free. Other, unofficial logos with rabbits that you can see on the packaging of products do not guarantee the ethicality of the products.

Currently, a law banning animal testing of cosmetics was passed in Ukraine on 20 January 2021, but this law will come into force only in 1.5 years. It should be noted that this is a significant step towards improvement!

However, even now you can find cruelty-free products in our country (including purely Ukrainian companies): NYX, Lush, Dushka, Benton, Planta, and Inglot.

Don’t try to switch to these brands at once, do it gradually, selecting individual brands and products that you like and replacing them.
