(book review)
It was quite difficult to choose a work, so I decided to choose by title. I was interested in the title ‘Liya never cries’ written by Kat. For some reason, I decided that the work would be about a schoolgirl or student, but it turned out to be a story about an adult woman.
From the very first lines of the story, we get to know the main character, Liya, and her husband. They quarrel a lot, and one day, with a broken heart, Liya slams the door and grabs the travel bag that she has packed in advance, together with her daughter Svetlanka, to go away. Liya escorts Svetlanka to school and then, sitting on a bench in the square under the chestnut trees, recalls her life until this day.
We learn that Liya suffers from “pituitary dwarfism” (short stature, dwarfism) – a disease that develops due to insufficient secretion of growth hormone (somatotropic hormone). The main clinical manifestation of this disease is pathological growth retardation. That is, Liya is very small…
The girl’s father died at work. Her mother lost her mind from the grief she experienced. One morning, Liya saw through the window how her mother had left the house and got on the bus. Liya never saw her again. The girl was very fond of drawing. She graduated from an art school and stayed to work there as a laboratory assistant. Had a suitor, also with the same diagnosis as her. Everything would be fine if it were not for a fateful accident. Liya was waiting at the railway station for a craftswoman of Petrykiv painting from the region. The train was delayed, it was very cold and Liya went to the library to warm up and pass the time. There she met Taras, who presented his new novel. They exchanged looks, a few words, and Taras gave her a book (his novel). Liya liked the novel and decided to thank Taras. She found him on social networks and wrote a letter. That was how their correspondence began, which soon led them to a registry office to turn into a married couple.
Taras belonged to those capricious men who needed constant care. And not only because of his vision problems. Liya took care of Taras all her life. He was much older than Liya. When they met, he had already written and published eleven novels. After his eyesight deteriorated, he divorced his wife. Liya took care of him and helped him with everything. You can say she lived her family and husband`s chores. Then Svetlanka was born. She was born healthy and did not inherit her mother’s illness. At that time, Taras was visually impaired. He finished his novel and did not pick up the pen again.
Liya continued to draw pictures. She especially liked to paint dishes and jugs. She bought clay products from a master she knew and made berries, leaves, butterflies, flowers on them, but she did not think about her own career. She didn’t think about herself at all. Taras always emphasized that her hobby was ordinary fun.
Svetlanka finished her lessons, approached her mother, interrupted her memories, and together they went home. What Liya saw at home shocked her. Taras tried to glue together the parts of the broken jug and then Liya heard what she had been waiting for all her life. “Now I will take care of you. My turn. You have taken care of me all my life,” said Taras. He changed his lifestyle and gave her the opportunity to fight for her dreams and win.
Frankly speaking, I got emotional when I finished reading the story. It conveys emotions in a sincere and supreme way. The events are realistic and modern. The work focuses on people with disabilities. It is definitely aimed at forming a positive perception of disability. The author’s style is felt throughout the story. I was interested in reading until the very end of the work. The finale was really unexpected…
My rating is 9/10.
