Maria and War

(article)

In recent years, Ukraine has been in the midst of a war that has taken a death toll on the country and its people. This war, which began in 2014, has resulted in thousands of deaths and has displaced millions of people. Amidst the chaos and uncertainty, the lives of ordinary Ukrainians have been severely impacted. In this article, we will take a closer look at the life of an ordinary Ukrainian person in present-day wartime.

Maria is a 35-year-old woman who lived in the outskirts of the city of Donetsk. She had been living in the same house with her family for the past 15 years. Before the war, life was much simpler for Maria and her family. She had a job as a nurse and her husband worked as a construction worker. They had two children, a 10-year-old son, and a 7-year-old daughter.

But when the war broke out, everything changed. The fighting between Ukrainian government forces and Russian-backed separatists in the eastern regions of Ukraine intensified, and Donetsk became a battleground. Maria and her family were forced to flee their home and seek refuge in a nearby village.

Life in the village was not easy. Maria’s husband struggled to find work, and the family had to rely on humanitarian aid to survive. Maria herself began to do odd jobs, such as cleaning houses, to make ends meet. But the constant fear of shelling and gunfire made it difficult for her to focus on anything else.

Despite the hardships, Maria and her family remained determined to stay in Ukraine. They could not bear the thought of leaving their home and starting anew in a foreign country. But as the war dragged on, their resolve began to weaken.

One day, Maria’s son came home from school and told her that he had seen a classmate killed by a shell. It was then that Maria realized that she could not continue to put her family in harm’s way. She made the difficult decision to leave Ukraine and seek asylum in a neighboring country.

Today, Maria and her family live in a small apartment in Poland. From time to time, they support Ukrainian volunteers. They are grateful to have escaped the violence and to have found a new home, but they miss their old life in Ukraine. Maria’s husband has found work as a truck driver, and she works as a caregiver for the elderly. Their children attend school and have made new friends, but they still talk about their old life in Donetsk and the friends they left behind.

The war in Ukraine continues to rage on, and the lives of ordinary Ukrainians continue to be affected. Maria’s story is just one of many, but it is a testament to the resilience and determination of the Ukrainian people. Despite the hardships they face, they remain committed to their country and their communities. And though their lives may never be the same again, they continue to hope for a brighter future.
