Today I want to discuss with you one of the Ukrainian mythological creations. It’s called Perelesnyk but you could also hear about him as litavyts, litun, dream, obayasnyk.

This creation is a lover`s spirit. According to popular belief, the lost soul of a boy who was killed by his own mother by having an abortion became a perelesnyk. They live at crossroads, near cemeteries, walking there in a barely noticeable breeze.

It was possible to “get,” to summon a perelesnyk, first of all, out of great longing for the deceased husband. This spirit saved women from loneliness. Of course, it was considered a dream, because it came only in delusions.

He had the face, body and even the smell of the deceased husband, he was a tender and ardent lover, so the woman even waited for his arrival.

BUT the problem was that during all these “dreams,” the perelesnyk drank the life force of the woman bit by bit until she either died or went mad. Such “delusions” could last for weeks, months and even years.

Externally transforming into a dead man or a dreamy young man, the perelesnyk still did not completely get rid of his otherworldly nature. He had hairy hooves like a goat. His appearance and disappearance were also strange. He did not enter the house through the door but flew in like a fiery snake through the chimney, and as soon as he touched the stove, he became a handsome boy or a man-in-waiting.

It is difficult to get rid of a perelesnyk. The most important thing is that the woman herself wants it. And those rituals and actions performed by the victim of the snake-obayasnyk were the most effective. So, the inside of the house was hung with aconitum and burnet-saxifrage. They put these herbs under the bed and under the pillow, sew them into clothes. From the outside, the house was generously sprinkled with poppies, while saying: “Then you will enter my house, when you have collected and protected all the poppies.”

So, be careful with your dreams. Who knows, who knows who will come to you into them.
