(opinion article)
It is often said that we need to move away from external indicators of success. Focus on honesty. To be sincere in advertising and in communication with the target audience. I agree that it is worth looking beyond appearances. But is this something new? For centuries, artists have been trying to show the essence of life and the problems of existence through color and symbols.
External elements, color, symbols have always been another language of communication. For example, did you know that if a Renaissance painting depicts a person in blue or red, it means that he or she has power? These would be either very influential people, landowners, cardinals, and Christ was often depicted in this way.
One of my favorite artists is René Magritte. He has an incredibly simple way of showing complex things. So I want to talk about the symbols he used.
In The Lovers, he depicts lovers with their heads covered. The author hints that they do not know each other at all.
Or in the painting Perspective: Madame Récamier depicts a coffin sitting on a couch, as if to hint that death has been with us for a long time, so now it’s time to live.
The painting, titled The Human Condition, depicts a landscape and an easel that seem to have no boundaries between them. The author says that there are no conditions, only existence.
He has many more paintings that depict society, life, or feelings, but in each one he questions the usual success or rules we are used to.
‘Golconda’ is another painting that raises many questions. It depicts men dressed in identical clothes, and despite their similarity, they ignore the earth’s gravity and place themselves in a chaotic manner. In general, the image of the man in the hat is a general picture of the fashion of the time, and the artist himself dressed the same way. Here he is talking to us about individuality. He asks what exactly distinguishes us from each other. Will the same clothes make us walk the earth? Will it prevent us from realizing our dreams? There are also a lot of thoughts about society, individuality, and self. There is a man in a hat in another famous painting by the artist, where an apple is depicted instead of a head. But that is a completely different story.
Magritte is an incredible artist who, during his lifetime, managed to successfully sell his paintings, collaborate with brands and exhibit his work in galleries. Magritte is a recognizable brand. No matter what color he chooses, no matter what he talks about, there is always his recognizable style with straight lines and strokes that are not visible to the eye.
