(short story with a red herring)

One of them must have been lying. The doors of the house were closed, things were carefully stacked, no traces were visible. Only a gap in the wall, the size of a small palm, pierced through, in the corner of Daniil’s parents’ room. And on the other side of the wall, a cache of money that Daniil was saving for university. The most marvelous thing is that exactly at three o’clock, at the most likely moment of the crime, the cameras in the house for some reason froze and turned off, and they started working only after exactly thirty minutes.

Maria and Vitaly sat silently on the couch in the living room after a loud argument.

Daniil thought about everything for a long time, and decided to ask his friends.

“Guys, I love you, I don’t think any of you could do that. But I have to ask who was doing what at the time?”

Maria was the first to speak,

“I was rushing to the bus stop at half past three, and I left the house locked as I went, so it’s definitely not me.”

Vitya only said,

“Diniil, how can you consider only the two of us guilty? You have a lot of friends, look for yourself and think about whether they could do it.”

Daniil thought even more, because Vitya is right, others should be suspected as well.
