The Modern Book Market of Ukraine

(blog article)

We used to treat books as something elitist. Something that has centuries-old traditions. But is the book really frozen in time and unchanged despite the development of technology? Absolutely not. The market is a thing that always changes according to circumstances. And over the past 10 years, Ukraine has seen so many changes that in some countries sometimes do not happen for half a century. So what will the book market in Ukraine look like in 2024?

Let’s talk about covid. Yes, it was a long time ago, but do you remember when we ordered books en masse for the presidential thousand hryvnias? There were huge delays because no one expected such a demand, and we had to wait a month for the book. Besides the fact that it gave hope to publishers, at the same time, the way most people work has completely changed. Many people started WFH (“Working from home”). This prompted companies to reconsider their way of organizing work, to trust employees more, to let them plan their own time.

BookTok has also become an important change in book publishing. Yes, opinions here vary from “I love BookTok and everything related to it” to “I hate it, you spoil modern literature.” We can argue about this for a long time, but the fact remains that BookTok has an impact on the popularity of a book, which ultimately affects its price, and this has already been accepted in Europe, where major book festivals open with lectures dedicated to BookTok. Well, let’s see where this will take us.

In recent years, Ukrainian book publishing has been growing, but due to the impermanence of these days, people are increasingly choosing either incredibly beautiful and expensive publications that they want to have in this life or electronic editions that they always have with them. This poses new challenges for publishers, including in book advertising.

Everyone is tired of flex (flex is the art of showcasing one’s achievements, possessions, or physical fitness). Sincere advertising is becoming more and more successful, and honest articles with admissions of mistakes or simply sincere texts are more useful than empty texts written according to the rules.
