What to watch?

(opinion article)

For a long time, Ukrainian cinema was something of a niche. It seemed as if it was some kind of high art that was far from ordinary people. But I ask you to reconsider these statements. First of all, Ukrainian cinema is close and understandable to us. It raises clear, relevant problems for us, helps us to reflect, to see ourselves partially on the screen. To feel a connection with many other people. It is at Ukrainian films that I have seen how the audience does not leave the theater until the titles end, how they applaud after the screening, how they cry over things that hurt me. To some extent, these are therapeutic experiences that help me to mourn old wounds and dare to move on.

I would like to offer my list of favorite Ukrainian films. I should warn you that everything here is subjective. The list will be short, but beautiful.

Luxembourg, Luxembourg

I went to the movies twice. I laughed and cried twice. The author showed Ukraine and its people, namely a particular family at different times, with understanding and love. You will love this movie for its authenticity, for its familiar picture and for its outstanding humor (although it is not a comedy at all). This movie is 11/10 for me.

Slovo House

will definitely impress you. I just want to tell you to run to the movies. But a few words about it: the plot is about a real house in Kharkiv. You will see real Ukrainian writers there, you will be impressed by the unrealistically beautiful picture, and the movie will make you cry, remember family stories, and surprisingly, this is exactly what I needed in this difficult time. 30/10

The Missing Hramota

shows as a little humor can help in difficult times. So now we’re going to talk about a comedy that was made in the last century, which was banned, then translated into russian, but still survived (and there are few such works of art, so it’s worth appreciating). If you think about it, these were difficult times for Ukraine (but what were the easy times?). At the same time, our people are shown as kind, original, somewhat naive, with weaknesses and strengths, and all this with love and complete acceptance. The movie is also interestingly filmed – each actor plays several roles, and there are many comic moments. There is a common sense irony here. 15/10

This is a very subjective list. These are my top movies that keep my thoughts within the framework of common sense. But there are more: ‘Earth,’ ‘Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors,’ ‘My Thoughts Are Quiet,’ ‘The Earth Is Blue as an Orange,’ ‘Home,’ and many, many others.
