Heroes of today: how volunteers save animals

(article)

The war in Ukraine takes away homes not only from people, but also from animals. People leaving their houses often decide to leave their pets to fates` hands. Fortunately, there are those who care about rescuing the poor creatures. This article contains some stories about those who do not forget to take care of pets, despite the horror that is happening in our country.

Inna Tkachenko and the Koto Bro project

The first volunteer whose experience is truly inspiring is Inna Tkachenko. Due to her boundless love for animals, she decided to start the Koto Bro project and evacuated 19 cats and 8 dogs during the war, although she works as an information security specialist from the cloud operator GigaCloud now.

“At first I saved the animals myself. And then I caught myself thinking, why not do it on a larger scale and seriously. I became a real volunteer after meeting a girl named Irina. We talked, and it turned out that we had a lot in common, and the key – we both just love animals. This is how the Koto Bro volunteer project to help homeless animals appeared, ” she said in an interview for Ukrayinska Pravda. Inna and four other like-minded people have been volunteering at Koto Bro for 2 years.

The experience of the girl during the evacuation of dozens of animals from Brovary district is significant. Inna and her family transported cats and dogs to Ternopil, spending almost a day on the road. “Currently we have 19 cats and seven dogs, three of which are looking for a home. Now I write all this with a smile, but then I didn’t believe until the last minute that we would do it, ” says the volunteer.

Bearded mother of cats Alexei Suvorovtsev

Stories of rescuing animals by this Ukrainian actor from the almost destroyed Irpen have already spread on all social networks. While people were saving their lives from the shelling, Oleksiy returned home to help the volunteers. He decided to save the animals after he was asked to get the cat out of the locked car. The mustachioed poor creature sat there without food and water for 4 days under fire.

“The video with the cat flew, and there were requests to save the animals. I love animals, so I tried to help everyone. We pass the saved animals to their owners or their relatives and friends. And those who are on the street – just feed. The worst thing is when an animal is locked in an apartment and dies of starvation, “ says the volunteer. In total, Oleksiy took more than 200 animals out of the city. Every day he traveled the streets, made his way to ruined apartments in search of furry ones, returned them to their owners, and fed the homeless cats and dogs. After the liberation of Kyiv region from the occupiers, Oleksiy continues to save animals in neighborhood.

In fact, there are almost hundreds of such stories all over Ukraine; you can’t list them all. The establishment of volunteer organizations or an simply individual desire to protect animals demonstrates the boundless kindness of Ukrainians and their steadfastness in the face of a common enemy and makes it clear that victory will be ours.
