Corfu or Kerkyra is a Greek island in the Ionian Sea, of the Ionian Islands, and, including its small satellite islands, forms the margin of the northwestern frontier of Greece. The principal city of the island is also named Corfu.

It is an incredibly inspiring island with friendly locals who always say ‘hello’ to you or ‘Calimera’ (in the morning) or ‘Calispera’ (in the evening). All the photos of this holiday just scream to be printed or create a calendar!

Before you get to Kerkyra, it will surprise you with its airport on the water. It’s not the only one in the world, but it’s very fascinating. It is quite small and from the sea it is protected only by a levee, where crowds of gapers from tourists look at the plane landing and taking off day in and day out.

You may have thought that this island is only suitable for sunbathing, lounge lying rest and eyeballing of airplanes, but it’s not. The ruins of ancient Greek temples and other archeological sites of Kerkyra, the historic town, are in Palaiopolis. The fortifications on the island were used by the Venetians to defend themselves from the Ottoman intrusion into the Adriatic.

After that Kerkyra was governed by Italy, Great Britain, and later came back to Greece, you can only imagine the variety of architecture styles here.

But I must warn you, if you plan a trip on this island, without a rental car and an experienced driver, you will not survive! On Kerkyra there are very high altitudes, narrow streets and on half roads, there are no guardrails (I was shocked to see on this serpentine sort of roads a huge two-level tourist bus.).
