‘On the Western Front without changes’ by Erich Maria Remarque

(book review)

With the beginning of a full-scale invasion, I swore to myself that I would not read books describing the war, because the surrounding reality was so depressing and frightening to me. On the other hand, I know many people whom Remarque’s books pulled out of depressive and anxious states and gave them a sense of understanding and belonging to similar states. Remarque shows us war not romanticized, without decorations that can distort our perception of it, but exactly as it is – cruel, tragic, deadly and merciless to everyone who is involved in it.

Incredibly emotional, Remarque binds us to the main characters of fate, whose lives end tragically in each of his works.

In the book ‘Unchanged on the Western Front,’ the story unfolds during the First World War. The main character, together with his seven classmates, gets to the front.

Reading this work, once again you understand that war represents the cruelest form of everything in the world. You are getting conscious of what War is and what Life is… My rating is 10/10.
